The saga of the Great Library of Alexandria, which controls all knowledge via its stranglehold on books, continues in Caine's latest fast-paced adventure. Book smuggler and now soldier in the High Garda, Jess Brightwell learns that a friend believed lost is actually a captive of the Great Library's leaders. Together with several of his fellow acolytes, Jess is determined to rescue Thomas and perhaps break the stronghold of the Great Library. As she did in the first book in the series, Ink and Bone (2015), Caine offers heart-stopping adventure and a strong mix of characters, both of which propel the story forward and raise the stakes. One of the book's strongest elements is the relationship between Jess' teacher, scholar Christopher Wolfe, and High Garda commander Nic Santini. The tender, protective bond between these two men elevates the story. Next up, the survivors are headed to London, where the stakes have risen immeasurably. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.
